Residence of The Danish Royal Family
In 1974, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (b. 1940) and her late husband H.R.H Prince Henrik (1934-2018) bought the château.
The Prince’s family had already been living in Albas, just 10km away from Cayx, for several decades. Prince Henrik was born Henri de Laborde de Monpezat. The family’s history can be traced back to the 15th century and they originated from Béarn.
Prince Henrik divided his time during his childhood years between Indochina (at that time a French colony), where his father and grandfather owned large estates, and the Lot Valley.
Over the years, the Queen and Prince restored the château to a well established 24 hectares of vineyard. Château de Cayx is located in the middle of the Cahors region dating back to the early 15th century, and in all likelihood even further back in time.

The Chateau de Cayx - Cahors Malbec AOP won the Gold Award from Le Concours Général Agricole - Paris in 2018.
Initiated in 1843 with the help of Poissy, the Concours Général Agricole was created in 1870 to select and award the best French regional products.

The Chateau de Cayx - Cahors Malbec AOP won the Gold Award from the CITADELLE DU VIN - 2018 of the Taster's Special Prize for the "Best Malbec of The World".
Every year, in March, over 50 top level tasters from all over the world meet in Bourg (Bordeaux-France) for several days to elect the best wines out of over 1,000 samples coming from about 30 countries.
The Cuvée Majesté - Limited Edition - 2014 won the Gold Award from the Challenge International du Vin in 2014. The Challenge International du Vin is the longest running major international wine competition. Each spring, more than 5,000 wines from 38 countries are tasted over two days in Bordeaux - France by some 800 wine professionals and expert wine-loving consumers.It is also the largest international wine competition held in France in quality approach which testifies the application of rigorous technical standards to its organization.
The Vineyard & Grape Variety
The 24 hectare Cayx vineyard boasts a magnificent full-south orientation, is sheltered from the cold northern winds and enjoys abundant sunshine.
The vineyard has an oceanic climate with Mediterranean influences. The warm and dry Autan wind blows from the south in the autumn, providing the perfect conditions for the berries until they reach maturity.
In the valley hollow at 90m above sea level, the meanders of the river regulate the temperature and are a permanent source of water, typical of fine wine terroirs.
Malbec & Chardonnay
The dominant grape variety is Malbec, which accounts for close to 100% of the Château’s red wines.
The Château’s white wine is made from Chardonnay, a grape variety perfectly suited to the area.
The higher plots in the Cayx winery are mainly limestone while the lower areas are limestone combined with gravel mixed with pieces of debris, meaning that the winery produces the most powerful Cahors wines suitable for cellaring.
